Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths and weaknesses based on community feedback

Strengths

Reliable DPM

The M60A1 features a reliable gun suited for its intended playstyle. A quick reload, respectable 504 base damage and 415mm of pen this gives the M60A1 a reliable and consistent gun to depend on when it needs it.

Strong mobility

Despite not being the fastest, the M60A1 offers solid mobility, characterized by rapid acceleration, effortless top speed maintenance, and a good hull traverse. It can also achieve a temporary surge of extreme speed with its ‘Charge’ ability.

Favourable hull geometry

The M60A1's uniquely favorable hull geometry allows it to conquer obstacles that would stop other tanks. This grants its commanders the freedom to exploit unconventional pathways and areas to strike from unforeseen angles or positions.

Overpowering torque

Thanks to the M60A1’s charge ability this vehicle can easily over-match any opponent except the XM1V in a pushing match, Allowing M60’s to score environmental kills with ease. Alternatively your ramming damage is greatly augmented by this skill allowing you to deal heavy ramming damage without too much return damage to your own vehicle.

Good ability synergy

Both of the M60A1’s regular abilities feature short cooldown timers and complement each other in close quarters. Players should use ‘Suppressive fire’ to fix an enemy in place and follow it up with ‘Charge’ to have a fast, decisive opening to most engagements.

Weaknesses

Limited HP Value

The M60A1 features a relatively low hit-point pool at only 2600 hit points meaning that any commander keeps a close eye on their health. Failure to manage a situation effectively will lead to a quick death as your staying power under fire is minimal.

Limited Reserve Energy

The M60A1’s abilities are relatively expensive. Coupled with the standard energy pool of 100 the M60 can very quickly find itself without its abilities. Players must be extra careful not to over rely on them and manage their usage effectively.

Glass Cannon

M60A1 features poor all round protection leaving it open to damaging shots from almost any opponent. Even auto-cannons may find ways to penetrate the tank. As a result players must be careful not to become the main focus of the enemy and adopt a more scavenger playstyle.

Large Critical Zones

A large weakness is the M60A1’s vulnerability to critical hits. Almost the entire 1/3rd of the rear is taken up by ammo, engine and fuel critical zones protected by only token armour. Even from the front M60A1 presents a vulnerable ammo rack and fuel tank.

Lack of Shields

The M60A1 stands apart from many CW tanks by lacking any sacrificial shielding. As a result, commanders must be prepared to receive the full impact of enemy shots in almost all situations.

Wearing a stab proof vest

The M60A1 is a scavenger at heart. Follow your team, allow them to engage and gain the full attention of your opponent before swooping in, immobilizing and ramming your target, securing the kill.

Stabbing

Slower play is actually more suited due to its lack of frontal module zone. Primarily use the 50cals to immobilise other flankers and in situations where you can ram them.

Tank Summary

The M60A1 is a unique and potentially powerful vehicle within World of Tanks: HEAT. While its limited survivability compared to many of its peers may initially discourage some players, those willing to invest time into understanding its strengths and niche role can find it both rewarding and highly effective.

Despite being a close-quarters brawler, the M60A1 lacks the durability typically associated with frontline fighters. Instead, commanders should adopt a second-line scavenger playstyle, allowing allies to initiate engagements before moving in to exploit openings, finish off weakened opponents, and unleash bursts of fast, violent aggression at the decisive moment.

Overall, the M60A1 is a high-risk, high-reward tank. Its unconventional playstyle will not appeal to everyone, but its rarity on the battlefield can work to its advantage, as many opponents will be unfamiliar with its capabilities and uncertain how best to counter it.
